Welcome back to November Notes: A Month in the Trenches — my daily journal as I reset the chaos and calm of work, motherhood, and finding fulfillment in the middle of it all.
Today is officially November 2 — and thanks to daylight savings time, we got a bonus hour of sleep. After a busy but restorative Saturday, we woke up to a rare kind of day: no plans, no places to be, and a house quietly begging for attention.
With zero commitments on the calendar, we decided to dedicate the entire day to getting our home — and our rhythm — back in order. The plan: tidy the house, put away the Halloween decorations, and prep for the week ahead so it starts with less chaos and more calm. The Dominos are Falling!
Hubby kicked things off with laundry duty and a batch of banana bread to use up the old bananas. That simple project quickly turned into a reminder of how out of rhythm we’ve been — between missing baking soda and a misplaced coffee grinder, it was clear we were overdue for a reset. I pulled together a quick Kroger Delivery order — a service we’ve used on and off for years – as he rattled off our much-needed groceries. We recently realized how much time and money it saves, not to mention keeping us eating at home more. With the app, deliveries can arrive as early as 5 AM in their own refrigerated trucks — and it feels like one less thing to manage during the week.
While he handled the grocery logistics (and another load of laundry or three), I spent about 30 minutes collecting all the indoor Halloween decorations from every room of the house. I purged the storage box of trash and unused items and started organizing for next year. There’s something satisfying about clearing out clutter while the kids play — in this case, a long-overdue Wii setup in the den that finally got plugged into our new surge protector after weeks of procrastination.
A Reset? What about playtime?
By afternoon, the day shifted outdoors. Hubby changed the oil on both cars while the kids played a rotation of bounce house, swings, and front yard sports with the neighbors. I joined them for a bit of sunshine, tackled a quick declutter session in the garage to make space on our holiday shelves, and played nurse when a swing accident led to an “ice cream bath” recovery.
By evening, most of the Halloween décor was packed away, the kids were showered, and — in true parenting fashion — they’re sleeping in our bed because I washed the sheets and forgot to dry them. (Yes, we have a backup set, but apparently Spider-Man sheets are non-negotiable.)
I had grand plans for today: tidy every main area, finalize a meal plan, prep outfits, and go to bed with everything ready for the week. That was ambitious for a weekend with the kids home, but I’m not throwing in the towel yet. Once the kids are down, I’m tackling a quick clean sweep, finishing my November calendar, and finally submitting that Kroger order.
Reflections
The lesson? Plans are great, but flexibility is better. When life’s full, forward progress counts — even if it’s imperfect. Today reminded me that sometimes the most productive days are the ones that look the most ordinary.
Fulfilled Hustle Tip: A peaceful week starts with a Sunday reset — not perfection, just progress.
