Reprioritizing When Life Throws You a Travel Curveball

We had the perfect weekend planned. My daughter’s birthday was set to be celebrated in style at Universal Orlando Resort, complete with family friends, two families, four kids, and endless Harry Potter magic. As I mention in this post, staying at a Universal Orlando Signature Collection Hotel makes everything smoother, with perks like early park admission and Universal Express Passes starting at 7 a.m. on the day of your stay.

Everything was mapped out with precision. Our neighbors, another couple with a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old, were joining us, and we had prepped everything—packed bags, matching Harry Potter robes, and a quick stop for coffee at Wawa before hitting the road at 7 a.m. for the two-hour drive. By 9 a.m., we expected to be walking through the gates, ready for an unforgettable adventure.

Then life threw us a curveball.

When Travel Plans Change in an Instant

About an hour into our journey, we got a call from our friends, who were about 20 minutes ahead of us. Their car had major engine trouble, forcing them to pull off into a parking lot. Talk about a stressful situation! And when you have four kids dressed in full Harry Potter gear, excitement levels at an all-time high, it’s easy to feel like the day is ruined before it even starts.

But in moments like this, reprioritizing becomes key.

Priority 1: Safety First

Our friends safely pulled into an auto parts store, but the news wasn’t good. Their car was barely running—definitely not road-trip ready. Our first priority was clear: making sure everyone was safe and out of harm’s way.

Priority 2: Keeping the Kids Happy

If you’ve ever been in a high-stress situation with kids, you know that keeping them calm is half the battle. While the dads worked under the hood and the moms figured out logistics, the kids stayed entertained, surprisingly patient despite the hiccup.

That’s when we made a call: rework the plan and keep moving forward.

Luckily, my Chevy Traverse has three rows of seating. After a little strategic packing (goodbye, unnecessary luggage, hello, squeezed-in car seats), we managed to fit:

  • Two extra car seats
  • Three additional passengers (yes, really!)
  • Four more suitcases

New plan? The dads would head home slowly with the broken car, while the moms and kids would continue to Universal. Not ideal, but we made it work!

Priority 3: Accepting “It Is What It Is”

Here’s the thing about travel curveballs—they’re frustrating, inconvenient, and sometimes expensive. But they also force you to pause, adapt, and shift focus.

Sure, our trip didn’t start as planned, but our ultimate goals were still within reach:

  • Get to the parks.
  • Buy wands and practice spells.
  • Ride rides and make magical memories.

Instead of dwelling on the setback, we embraced what we could control:

  • The husbands would meet up with us later.
  • The kids would still get their Wizarding World of Harry Potter experience.
  • We’d stay present and enjoy the day.

The Best Travel Stories Come from the Unexpected

Despite the chaos, we checked into our Universal hotel, hit the parks, and had a truly magical day (yes, with a few meltdowns sprinkled in). And the car trouble? It could wait until after the vacation.

At the end of the day, life happens, plans change, but the real magic is in how you adapt. This experience reminded me that:

  • Flexibility is key when traveling with kids.
  • Leaning on your support system makes a difference.
  • Memories are made in the unexpected moments.

So, the next time your perfect travel plans go sideways, take a deep breath, reprioritize, and keep going. You’ve got this.
